After Epiphany, the weather changed drastically, and icy winter air from the east settled over large parts of the country. Winter shows its cold side, with snowfall, frost, and low temperatures.
The lowest temperatures for six years have even been recorded in Vienna. In this weather report, we look at the current conditions, shed light on the outlook for the coming days and give an outlook on possible changes in the second half of the week.
Wintry start to the week
The beginning of the week was characterized by snowfall, frost and cold, which created a wintry atmosphere, especially towards the end of the vacation. Vienna even recorded its lowest temperatures for six years.
Forecast for the coming days
The freezing cold will continue to accompany us over the next few days. Nevertheless, compact patches of high fog could counteract excessive cooling at night in some regions. In addition, foehn winds from the south and later from the north will come into play and influence the weather conditions.
Moderation in sight
All-clear for all those suffering from frost: the moderate frost in the lowlands should ease in the second half of the week. The wind will also shift to westerly directions, and the weekend promises widespread plus temperatures.
Ideal conditions in the mountains
Winter sports enthusiasts can rejoice, as the weekend is expected to offer ideal mountain conditions. Fresh snow and the persistent cold have significantly improved the quality of the slopes. Tobogganing and cross-country skiing are possible in many places in fantastic winter weather. The zero-degree limit is around 2000 meters above sea level.
When will it snow again?
With a north-westerly flow, new areas of low pressure may be approaching soon, which could bring rain and snowfall. However, there is also the possibility that the Alpine region will continue to be influenced by a foehn-like south-westerly current, which indicates less precipitation overall.
Uncertain outlook for the end of the month
The models forecast the possibility of Italian lows for the last third of the month. However, this development remains uncertain and holds various scenarios for the coming weeks.
The forecast in detail:
The weekend in Austria promises a varied weather situation from north to south. Sunny and dry weather awaits us from Vorarlberg to Salzburg, while more clouds will appear in the east due to a nearby low. We look closer at the forecasts for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Friday, January 12
The sun will shine from Vorarlberg to Salzburg, and dry weather awaits us south of the main Alpine ridge. The early morning fog will clear quickly, while there will be more clouds in Upper Austria due to the proximity of a low in the northeast. It may snow lightly in Vienna and Lower Austria from the cloud cover.
During the afternoon, however, the chances of sunny spells will increase. The wind will blow moderately to briskly from northwest to north in the northeast and on the eastern edge of the Alps, while it will mostly remain light elsewhere. Early morning temperatures will be between minus 12 and minus 2 degrees, and daytime highs will be between minus 2 and plus 4 degrees.
Saturday, January 13
Temporary high fog-like cloud fields will pass through the country’s north, although it will mostly remain free of precipitation. Sunshine will predominate in the south, with partly cloudless skies in the west and south and light winds.
In the north and east, however, the wind will blow moderately to briskly from westerly directions, with early temperatures ranging between minus 12 and minus 1 degrees, while daytime highs will be between minus 2 and plus 5 degrees.
Sunday, January 14
Sunshine will generally predominate, but there will also be a few patches of cloud. In the north and west, they may sometimes become denser, accompanied by scattered snowflakes. The wind will blow weakly to moderately, mainly from the west, with a slight increase in the east.
Early temperatures will range between minus 11 and minus 1 degrees, with daytime highs between minus 3 and plus 6 degrees.
